Gariboldi

Here is a view of the SaskPower building in downtown Regina, a 1960’s classic. This angle – from my exam room in the historic Hotel Saskatchewan – captures the whimsy of an architectural timepiece, and I was given the nod by security to record briefly during my tea-break. The lobby, festooned with ‘Green Energy’ literature, features vintage mosaic detailing, and a sizeable tiled fountain that can be heard in the background for this playing of a RCM Grade 2 study by Gariboldi.

Thanks to everyone at SaskPower for the warm welcome!

Recently I performed with colleagues in the concrete shell of the Royal Conservatory of Music’s new Koerner Hall, as part of a ‘Hard Hat Concert’ and catered thank-you lunch for the construction crew on the site. It was probably in part the rather unusual repertoire of the event (Bach, Wagner, Led Zepplin?!) that prompted NYC’s PLAYBILL Arts to pick up the story shortly after it appeared in the Toronto Star under the light-hearted title: ‘Sonata in C for Flute and Jackhammer’.

Busking culture in Toronto seems even more diverse and accomplished these days, and Yonge and Bloor can be a hotspot.

As you will hear, this piper, Curly, is a fine player, with a handsome, mellow-sounding set of antique, hand-carved pipes from Persia. (more…)

My teaching and freelance work includes weekly music programs for seniors, and in addition to providing a variety of flute music, I have recently been featuring a wonderful new biography about Glenn Gould, a film by Bruno Monsaingeon entititled ‘HEREAFTER’.

Below you will find more about Glenn Gould in an article from today’s National Post which describes an upcoming exhibition at the Museum of Civilization in Hull celebrating this great Canadian iconoclast, and set to open in September. (more…)

My sister, Lynn, who lives out on the West Coast, has a radio show with Radio Malaspina out of Nanaimo called Living on Purpose, and she recently aired a segment that she and I had recorded before Urban Flute Project even had a name. Besides having a rare chance to visit and catch up a bit with Lynn, we explored the novel concept of recording flute ‘in situ’ in several locations of historic and personal significance. We recorded briefly in Castle Frank Station, The Distillery District, as well as a wonderful church on St. Clair Avenue West. This last location featutures an impromptu duo for flute and organ.
