At the outset of exploring various aspects of Toronto, and with the unseasonably warm weather extending in to November, I took the opportunity to play outdoors.

I had always thought of this park near Lawrence and Yonge as the Rose Garden, however, as I looked about for a spot to play, I came upon this plaque, which immediately confirmed a musical significance to the location. (more…)

In the Don Valley, fires periodically swept through the natural grasses long before the Brick Works’ kilns were fired up. These massive kilns, now derelict yet largely intact and still on site, basically ‘built’ Rosedale’s exquisite and stately homes along with many of the historic buildings of original Toronto.

Evergreen’s proposed transformation of the historic Don Valley Brick Works site is visionary and truly inspiring, and is poised to offer an incredible, culturally rich hub for Toronto’s system of ravines and natural trails.

Recently visiting Arizona, and despite warnings that the rattlers were ‘on the move’ with the 90+ heat, I was determined to go in search of petroglyphs. Hiking alone, and perhaps ill-advisedly, I followed an arid, rock-strewn trail at daybreak, deep into the Superstition Mountains, flute in hand. (more…)

Living on Purpose

My sister, Lynn, who lives out on the West Coast, has a radio show with Radio Malaspina out of Nanaimo called Living on Purpose, and she recently aired a segment that she and I had recorded before Urban Flute Project even had a name. Besides having a rare chance to visit and catch up a bit with Lynn, we explored the novel concept of recording flute ‘in situ’ in several locations of historic and personal significance. We recorded briefly in Castle Frank Station, The Distillery District, as well as a wonderful church on St. Clair Avenue West. This last location featutures an impromptu duo for flute and organ.
