You’ve gotta love spontaneous music, especially when it’s for a good cause!

Recently at a fundraiser for the CIBC Run for the Cure on the shaded lawn of U of T’s International Student Centre, I really enjoyed some of the finest live music so far this summer, all the sweeter for the informal, chance encounter! Brothers Max and Frank (on the far left and far right, respectively) along with guitarist Chris Coole – whose mom last year spearheaded a record-setting team effort for the Run for the Cure – demonstrate superb musicianship.

For a year or so, Frank studied flute with me at the Waldorf School, until he announced he was switching to banjo: I was naturally crushed (!) but outwardly very supportive at the time: never had a student abandoned me for the banjo…yet after hearing this terrific trio, this is definitely very cool…okay, fine Frank: you’re forgiven!!

Crazy thing is, just a few days later I was biking west on the Bloor Viaduct, and this guy passes me (this doesn’t happen too often, and I take this kind of thing v seriously – hey, not that I’m overly-competitive or anything!!), so I drafted in behind and caught up the young rider at the next red light, at Castle Frank. Without his banjo, it took me a second to recognize that it was Frank!*

An avid cyclist himself, he and a couple of friends were were about to head off to Montreal for the Jazz Festival …yeah, by bike! Since I had been toying with the romantic and altruistic idea of joining the 400-odd riders for the 9th annual Friends for Life fundraiser to Montreal (one day layover, and then VIA back…and a minimum of $2,000 in pledges to join!), I could appreciate their enthusiasm; Frank and his friends figure it’ll take 2-3 days each way!

* Oh… Castle Frank~ Banjo Frank! This is a total coincidence, I assure you!!
