And so the ghosts at Tower Automotive were set free to roam.
…as they were at the old Don Jail http://urbanfluteproject.com/2009/05/14/don-jail-drop-zone/
I am just so amazed. I live near-ish to Detroit, and think that would be something I would like to try. How did you get permission to go into the abandoned spaces? Suggestions?
Email me please.
Hi Kate, Thanks so much for your comment and interest in exploring urban spaces that might be found off the beaten path…especially if you are in the Detroit area, as you mention: what a gold mine for Urban Exploration!
I suppose I should put some kind of disclaimer on my site, you know, something like “kids, don’t try this without adult supervision” ; )
…but that being said, infiltrating unusual spaces - usually without prior consent - are oddly some of my happiest moments, not so much for any kind of transgression, but for the sense of solitude, awe and mystery that I associate with entering an abandoned or forgotten space for the first time - it feels a bit like discovering a lost world.
Recording a bit with my flute enhances the sense of wonderment…
Recently I have been teaming up with a UE group of photographers, TLR (as I likely mention in this post) and the group adventure is different again, yet also very enjoyable.
I would suggest that you make contact with any UE groups in Detroit, and I’m sure there would be a few to connect with…I’ll ask around at this end and see if I can get some leads for you.
Although I don’t endorse unlawful activity, UE is certainly very popular…and not without its hazards both legally and to your physical well-being!
So I would suggest exercising discretion in considering any kind of activity as described in my Urban Flute adventures.
Are you imaging just going exploring, taking a few pictures, making music, or perhaps all of the above?!
I have heard of forgotten pianos in derelict Detroit hotel lobbies, and will let you know if I’m headed south of the border at some point!
Cheers,
J
PS If you enter ‘detroit’ in the search box on UFP, there are a few posts from when I recorded downtown there a couple of years back - J
