” Brilliant application of DJ-Technique to Film – GROUNDBREAKING!” – Los Angeles Times

Y’all check this…right here in Toronto, and coming to a library near you! Please see full-size poster below…

In celebration of Black History Month, you are invited to a special screening of Paul D. Miller’s – a.k.a. D.J. Spooky’s - ground-breaking film, Re-Birth of a Nation, as presented by St. Alban’s Boys & Girls Club at the Palmerston Street location of the Toronto Public Library System, located on Palmerston Street, North of Bloor, just West of Bathurst)

The screening of this provocative re-working of the D.W. Griffith’s original 1912, prejudiced-tainted Birth of a Nation offers a unique perspective on Black Culture today. Bring your questions on-the-ready as the panel discussion will surely pick up where the film leaves off!

This event is sponsored directly by D.J. Spooky himself, in conjunction with numerous screenings across Canada and the United States. If you take the time to follow this last embedded link, you will find reference to his ‘upcoming’ book, Sound Unbound, which has since been launched to critical acclaim. Sound Unbound, along with its eclectic CD remix, makes an incredibly compelling read/listen, and I’m happy to report that I have my own signed copy, having had the pleasure of making Paul’s acquaintance after his recent lecture at the University of Toronto, an event co-hosted by OISE and Andrea Caldwell productions.

Check it. This timely and street-savvy re-working of a film that admittedly went on to serve – for better or for worse – as a foundational piece for early Hollywood movie production will simply blow you away…guaranteed you will never look at Black Culture or Hollywood in the same way!

Okay, so if that last link for Spooky was a little too cerebral for you, here’s a couple of more visceral and perhaps representative of the work of That Subliminal Kid as I originally experienced his work listening to the CBC’s Brave New Waves back in1982.

See you at Palmerston Library, Saturdy, February 28th, 1-5 pm…here’s the poster, writ large:
