Okay, this is admittedly a little random, but have you ever seen a Team Mascot snowboarding behind a Zamboni? Naturally, there is a flute connection in case you thought I was totally losing it!

A highlight of finding myself at the Ricoh Coliseum to take in a Marlies game was to have the pleasure of hearing the Argonotes, the official band for the Toronto Argonauts Football Club. It turns out that they ‘keep in shape’ by playing in the off-season for the Toronto Marlies. And, despite looking and sounding like a fun-loving brass band, I did see a flute in their midsts…maybe they need a little volunteer flute backup!?

The Marlies are on the ropes, down 3-zip in their best of seven series: game day this Wednesday, and we’ll see if they can pull a rabbit out of their hockey helmet! Like catching a killer wave, I guess it’s do or die!

Afterword: The Marlies are still alive and off to Chicago, and Steve, who conducts the band, has provided this link so that you can behold the Argonotes in all their glory with their full rendition of Surfin’ USA!

With a love of teaching and chamber music, Toronto-based flutist JAMIE THOMPSON has performed as both soloist and chamber musician in Canada and the United States, and continues to be active as aFreelance Musician, Teacher, Adjudicator and Clinician, specializing in community outreach, multi-media events and creative, performance-preparation workshops and coaching sessions.

Jamie has been on the Flute Faculty of the RCM since 1988. In addition to teaching and coaching, he has served as Chair, Woodwind Brass and Percussion Department, and has served on numerous committees, including The Community School Divisional Committee, Academic Council and the Council of Examiners. In addition Jamie has presented workshops on Examination and Performance Preparation, co-ordinated the RCM Professional Development Lecture Series, and has co-chaired the Faculty Advisory Committee for the RCM’s new TELUS Performance and Learning Centre, scheduled to open in 2008.

Thanks for the kind words and yes we did have a flute and more flutes == better.

Can we just add that we are, uh, scaling the band to match the size of the crowd, and “Surfin’ USA” sounds a lot better when we have our full group out at a football game? Here it is with 70 folks at the Grey Cup last year in a fountain outside Skydome –
