Satie, Gymnopedie
“…like a Greek God, or Lord Krishna himself!”

It’s certainly not every day I get likened to cultural deities as I did at the end of this Gymnopedie by Satie, but I certainly don’t mind the compliment, no offence to the Gods!

UrbanFlute is tough work, and I have to fuel up once in a while. For the best grilled cheese this side of Mount Olympus, visit Olympus Crow Bar Restaurant down on Adelaide East. And when you’re taking in the vintage surroundings at Olympus, replete with the requisite 50′s barstools, be sure to ask Jimmy or Mike (pictured above) about Jack Daniels or Canada’s iconic balladeer, Stompin’ Tom, who have been known to frequent the place from time to time.

As I ate I assessed the music that I had with me, and was delighted to find an appropriate reference in the writing of Satie. Jimmy and I bounced around ideas as to the exact meaning of the word Gymnopedie, and narrowed it down to ‘naked legs’, yet I continue to be a little unclear as to the full significance of this ceremonial dance originating from Ancient Greece.

And here is another Greek God who has also been spotted on in the area…how could I resisit?!
