Carillon at Soldiers’ Tower
Marking the 90th anniversary of Vimy Ridge, the University of Toronto’s historic Soldiers’ Tower featured two Carillon Concerts today, and have opened their doors to the public through Thursday of this week.
This performance was recorded on a damp, overcast November-like afternoon as children played tag on the adjacent sports field. Gordon Johnston, visiting fromOttawa and filling in for Michael Hart, is at the keyboard, hidden high in the tower.
The juxtaposition of children’s laughter intermingling with this theme and variations is poignant given the text for the original piece - ‘Remember Me, But Don’t Forget My Fate’ - and the underlying solemnity of the day. As the piece unfolds, the children’s laughter melds musically with the nuanced peel of the bells!
Soldiers’ Tower is an extraordinary site to visit, with or without a carillonneur in the tower.
